Cloud and edge computing are essential technologies in a computing continuum to ensure data is managed more efficiently – closer to the originating source rather than transmitting raw data to data centres. As recent studies suggest, data processing is moving closer to the edge. Thus, advancing the IoT can reduce communication and storage costs, energy consumption and produce benefits for citizens and businesses thanks to the integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning. These trends call for a shift towards the technical and business convergence of the so-far formally separated Cloud, Edge and IoT domains.

More than 40 European research projects have collaborated in the development of a common taxonomy and a reference architecture for the continuum, going beyond the classification of cloud-edge-IoT to a single integrated view. Topics such as artificial intelligence, resource and data management, security, trust or orchestration, among others, were also addressed.

As a result of this activity, an ongoing preliminary work item was opened within ISO to develop

  1. an ontology for the continuum,
  2. a new glossary with terms affecting it,
  3. a reference architecture, and
  4. developing patterns for addressing issues in different verticals.

This talk provides the major hints and the current ongoing work in this aspect that will be published as the first standard with European research projects results.
