The future of Cloud-Edge-IoT (CEI) is here. Last week, the Polytechnic University of Valencia hosted the launch of the groundbreaking O-CEI project, a collaborative effort uniting 58 partners from 20 countries. This ambitious initiative, backed by the EU Horizon Europe program, seeks to revolutionise CEI infrastructures by making them more open, interoperable, and sustainable.
O-CEI recognises the challenges posed by the increasing demand for data and computing power in decentralised CEI networks. These challenges include soaring energy consumption, costs, and carbon emissions. To combat these, O-CEI is developing an Open-CEI platform that will facilitate real-time data sharing and seamless collaboration across various sectors, accelerating the adoption of innovative solutions for energy optimisation.
What sets O-CEI apart?
- Open Marketplace: O-CEI will foster a resilient multi-platform ecosystem for digital assets like services, datasets, and AI models, driving innovation and collaboration.
- Standardisation: By promoting open standards for virtualisation and interoperability, O-CEI will break down data silos and enable smoother integration across different platforms and technologies.
- Real-World Impact: O-CEI's commitment to real-world applications is evident in its 8 large-scale pilot projects. These pilots, built on 28 use-case scenarios, spanning across 6 verticals (from smart grids and electric vehicles to sustainable agriculture and 5G networks) will demonstrate the transformative potential of O-CEI's innovations.
Expected Outcomes
O-CEI is poised to deliver significant benefits, including:
- Reduced environmental impact: By optimising energy consumption in CEI networks.
- Increased resource efficiency: Through intelligent resource management and allocation.
- Enhanced adaptability: Enabling industries to respond effectively to dynamic energy demands.
- Accelerated innovation: By fostering a collaborative ecosystem for the development and deployment of cutting-edge CEI solutions.
With its focus on openness, interoperability, and sustainability, O-CEI is paving the way for energy flexibility and a more efficient digital future. This project represents an essential step towards Europe's clean energy transition and the creation of a resilient digital infrastructure.
